This urban realm scheme integrates six student accommodation blocks together via a series of courtyard spaces. Like all urban residential schemes, the landscape sought to deliver a richness in both user experience and flexibility of use. The landscape seeks to facilitate both the social and educational needs of the students by providing an environment which is engaging, diverse and attractive whilst being safe and legible.

The River Itchen adjacent to the site provided inspiration for the continuous design motif set within the landscape reflecting the natural meandering of the river course. This strong conceptual driver was interwoven throughout both the hard and soft landscaping. The pallete of materials used throughout the scheme were carefully chosen to boldly reveal the river motif as well as to complement the contemporary style of architecture.

Look who's involved

“Although difficult to achieve due to the modest scale of the courtyard spaces, we were really pleased with how the cohesive design language defined spaces within the scheme which allowed for both user interpretation and functionality.”
